Luke 24:32 records the disciples saying their hearts burned within them while Jesus talked with them on the road and opened the Scriptures. Romans 10:17 teaches that faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ. Together these verses show how Christ uses His Word to awaken faith, rekindle hope, and stir hearts that had grown dull.
Devotional: There are seasons when the heart feels cold. Not rebellious, necessarily. Just tired. Prayer feels flat. Worship feels harder than it used to. The Bible may still be open in front of us, but our spirit does not always feel quickened by it. Most believers know that experience, even if we don’t talk about it much.
That is why Luke 24:32 is such a gracious verse. The disciples do not say they had everything figured out. They do not say they had perfect faith on the road. They say their hearts were burning within them while Jesus opened the Scriptures. In other words, Christ was doing something in them before they could fully explain it. He was warming what grief had chilled.
Sometimes we think a burning heart means emotional excitement. It can include emotion, but it is deeper than that. It is the inward work of grace when truth lands in the soul with weight and life. It is the moment when the Word is no longer just words on a page, but living speech from the Lord who knows us. It is not manufactured. It is awakened.
That should encourage anyone who feels spiritually worn down. You do not have to create your own fire. Bring your tired heart to Christ and stay near His Word. Ask Him to speak again. Ask Him to make the old truths live in you with fresh strength. He still does that. He still takes hearts that have been numbed by fear, sorrow, or routine and stirs them toward faith again.
Some days the warming may be quiet. Some days it may come through a verse you have read a hundred times. Some days it may come in worship or prayer or while sitting in silence with God. However it comes, the source is the same. Jesus still knows how to set hearts burning again.
Action: Spend ten quiet minutes today reading one short passage slowly and asking Jesus to awaken your heart through His Word.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, You know when my heart feels tired, distracted, or cold. Thank You that You do not turn away from weary believers. Open Your Word to me again and let its truth settle deeply in my soul. Renew my faith, awaken my hope, and stir in me fresh love for You. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
Thought for the Day: Jesus still knows how to warm a heart that has grown tired.
There are seasons when the heart feels spiritually tired, flat, or cold. Luke 24:32 reminds us that Jesus still knows how to awaken faith and stir hope through His Word. The disciples did not have everything figured out on the road, but their hearts were already burning as Christ opened the Scriptures to them. This devotional is for anyone who feels worn down and needs the reminder that God is still able to breathe life into what has grown dull. Jesus still speaks in ways that warm the heart and steady the soul.
