Chapter 12: Abram's Call and Journey to Egypt

God calls Abram to leave his native Haran and journey to a promised land, assuring blessings, fame, and protection. Faithfully, Abram, along with his wife Sarai and nephew Lot, venture to Canaan. There, God reiterates His promise to give this land to Abram's offspring. However, due to famine, Abram descends to Egypt for sustenance. Fearing for his life because of Sarai's beauty, Abram deceives the Egyptians by presenting Sarai as his sister. Pharaoh takes Sarai into his palace, enriching Abram in the process. However, when God afflicts Pharaoh's household with plagues because of Sarai, Pharaoh realizes the truth, rebukes Abram, and sends them away.

Chapter 13: Abram and Lot Separate

Returning from Egypt enriched, Abram moves to the Negev and then to Bethel. However, the combined wealth of Abram and Lot strains the land's resources, leading to disputes between their herdsmen. To maintain peace, Abram suggests they part ways. Lot chooses the fertile Jordan Valley, settling near Sodom, a city notorious for wickedness. Abram, in contrast, resides in Canaan. God reassures Abram, promising him all the land he can see and innumerable descendants.

Chapter 14: Abram Rescues Lot and Meets Melchizedek

A confederation of eastern kings wages war against a coalition that includes the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. Lot, now living in Sodom, is taken captive when the city falls. On hearing this, Abram assembles a rescue force, defeats the eastern kings, and retrieves Lot along with other captives and goods. After the victory, Abram encounters Melchizedek, the king of Salem and a priest of God Most High. Melchizedek blesses Abram, who in turn offers him a tenth of the spoils.

Chapter 15: God's Covenant with Abram

God appears to Abram in a vision, reaffirming protection and rewards. However, Abram laments his childlessness, mentioning Eliezer of Damascus as his heir. God promises him a biological heir and descendants as numerous as the stars. Trusting God's words, Abram's faith is credited to him as righteousness. God then formalizes His promise through a covenant ritual. Abram prepares a sacrifice, and as darkness descends, a smoking fire pot and flaming torch—representing God—pass between the divided animals, signifying God's binding commitment to fulfill His promise to Abram.
