Peter’s confession that Jesus is the Messiah is immediately followed by his struggle to accept the path Jesus says He must take. Peter wants a Messiah who brings victory without suffering, but Jesus makes clear that the way of God is not built on self-preservation. The cross reveals a kingdom shaped by obedience, sacrificial love, and trust in God rather than by control, comfort, or worldly power.

Jesus’ call to deny ourselves and take up our cross is not a command to hate ourselves or accept abuse. It is a call to surrender the belief that our own desires, plans, and preferences should always come first. Cross-bearing means choosing the way of Jesus even when that choice costs something. It may mean forgiving when resentment feels safer, telling the truth when silence would be easier, giving when we would rather keep, or standing beside someone others have pushed aside.

The temptation to preserve ourselves can shape individuals and churches alike. We can become so focused on protecting our reputation, comfort, traditions, possessions, or sense of control that we lose sight of what faithful discipleship requires. Jesus asks a deeper question than whether we are successful by the world’s standards. He asks what is happening to our souls and whether we are becoming more loving, merciful, generous, truthful, and faithful.

Grace is what makes this kind of surrender possible. We do not give ourselves to Christ in order to earn God’s love. We surrender because God has already loved us, called us, forgiven us, and begun shaping us through grace. Peter sees the cross and assumes defeat, but Jesus sees beyond the cross to resurrection and glory. The life entrusted to Christ is not wasted. In God’s grace, the life we surrender is the life we finally begin to find.
